Romance and the Perseids

Back in about 2003 Carrie and I had been casual friends for a couple of years. Through the summer of 2003 Carrie had been showing more and more interest in me... okay, during that summer I think we both had been realising a growing affection for each other but we were by no means letting each other know.

Then during camp that year, after the campers had gone to sleep, a few of the counsellors, including Carrie and myself, went out to the field away from the tents. Carrie and I sat down a little distance away from the others and talked. Then at about the same time we looked up and thought we saw a meteor. Then another and another. Now we know that what we looked at were the Perseids. This meteor shower comes from the comet... Add a comment

Strategic Stands

In September of 1955 a relatively small ship sailed north of Scotland, far north, to a small rock island called Rockall. One writer described it as "the most isolated small rock in the oceans of the world". Her Majesty's Ship Vidal arrived and the next day sent a small contingent of men to raise the Union Flag and lay claim to this seemingly unimportant rock. Rockall is 102 feet long and 83 feet wide. The ship sent to lay claim to it was 297 feet long and 40 feet wide.

What Will You Leave Behind?

Recently I met a man who originally came from Hawaii. In discussing Hawaii's history and current affairs, and by extension world affairs, I have to come to the conclusion that history is messy.

One area of the world where acts in history have left us with troubles today is in the Pakistan/Afghanistan region. The British Empire extended to this geographic region, brought some good but also brought trouble and committed crimes, and then badly redrew national boundries and left. The foolish... Add a comment
